Yori House on Elm Street in Cortland is the address in the city for the kind of meal and experience that the downtown restaurant circuit in a city this size rarely sustains at this level. Five stars for a kitchen that is clearly operating with both technical skill and genuine investment in what's on the plate.

The menu is chef-driven in the actual sense: the sourcing decisions and the preparations reflect someone making real choices about quality at each component of the dish rather than running a formula. In Cortland, where the dining options are real but the competition from destinations like Prandium and Los Lagos is focused on their own categories, Yori House represents a different register — more intentional, more ambitious on the plate.

Elm Street puts you within walking distance of the rest of downtown Cortland, which means a Yori House dinner easily connects to the broader circuit of the city's good restaurants and bars. Green Arch is right next door. Wild Ginger is a few blocks up. The Starbucks on Clinton is there for those mornings that follow a long Cortland night. A good Cortland meal starts with making a reservation here first.
