Yaman Park is Cortland city park in the classic sense: a green corridor running along a creek, athletic fields, trees old enough to have been planted by people who are now gone, maintained by a parks department working within the constraints of a small city budget. It does what a city park is supposed to do. It gives the neighborhoods around it somewhere to go.
The creek corridor in the flat light of late afternoon is worth the walk. The park infrastructure is functional and maintained. The ball fields serve the youth sports programs that make a town like Cortland work.
Five stars for a park that earns its place in the community without announcing itself. The best city parks are the ones that feel continuous with the neighborhoods they serve. Yaman Park is that.
