Second Chance Diner on West Genesee Street in Syracuse is the kind of place that makes you feel okay about the world when you walk in the door. Food at five. Service at five. Atmosphere at four — and the four is not a critique of anything they've done, it's an acknowledgment that a classic American diner on a commercial stretch of West Genny doesn't have the specific visual personality that earns a five from me on room alone. The four on atmosphere is a warm four.
The food earns its five outright. Breakfast here is real breakfast: eggs cooked correctly, home fries made from scratch, bacon that has actual flavor, French toast that uses real bread at the right thickness. The lunch menu runs to the diner standards and holds the same quality standard through the menu. Everything is made like someone is paying attention to whether the dish is good before it leaves the window.
Service at five is earned. The staff here operates with the efficiency and warmth that a busy diner needs to function well. You don't wait long for anything and nobody makes you feel like your presence at the counter is an inconvenience. West Genesee west of downtown Syracuse has a sequence of practical businesses and Second Chance Diner is the one that makes the strip worth knowing about. A regular stop when I'm on that side of the city.
