Santangelo's Restaurant has been on Old Liverpool Road in Liverpool for long enough to have developed the specific weight that restaurants with actual tenure carry. It's not a chain. It's been there. The people who eat here regularly have been eating here for years, in some cases decades, and that continuity is visible in how the room operates and who fills it on a Tuesday night versus a Friday.
Five stars for an Italian-American restaurant that understands the category. The portions are sized for people who are actually hungry. The sauce is made, not poured. The bread comes out right. The room has the lighting and sound at the level that allows conversation without requiring you to raise your voice across the table. These things are achievable and Santangelo's has consistently achieved them.
Old Liverpool is a short drive from the north side of Syracuse, which makes Santangelo's a straightforward weeknight dinner option for a large chunk of the CNY population that doesn't want to fight parking downtown or wait in line at someplace newer. The regulars at the bar already know this. Worth knowing if you don't.
