Reakes Country Goods is on Route 13 in Truxton, which is the long rural stretch south of Preble where the road drops into the Tioughnioga watershed and the land is clearly operating at a different pace than anything close to the interstate. Five stars for a store that understands its location and its customer.
This is the genuine version of the country store: a mix of functional rural goods, local products, and the kind of inventory that accumulates in a shop that has been serving the same area for long enough to know what actually sells. Feed, hardware, local foods, the kind of items that the nearest big-box alternative would make you drive thirty minutes to find. The fact that it exists at this location on Route 13 is the reason it earns five stars — it's filling a real gap in a rural county that would otherwise have none of this.
Truxton sits between the Tioughnioga River valley and the higher terrain east toward Fabius, and the Route 13 corridor through this section is one of the more scenic drives in Cortland County — the river valley is narrow and the hillsides are steep in a way that gives the whole stretch a character distinct from the broader plateau to the west. Tinker Falls is about five miles north. Worth making the side trip.
