The Beach Road public beach at Lake George is the most direct public access to the southern end of the lake, and in summer it fills with exactly the crowd you'd expect given the proximity to the village. The water is clear — Lake George is among the cleanest lakes in the state, which is a fact the surrounding development has had to fight to maintain — and on a weekday morning before the summer crowds land, it's genuinely beautiful.
I logged this in February 2023, which puts me there in the off-season scouting mode. The beach in winter is the beach stripped down to its actual geometry: the crescent of sand, the water going all the way to the mountains, the sound of nothing. It's easier to understand why people have been coming here for two centuries when the fudge shops are all closed.
For summer access: come early, mid-week if possible. The lake earns the attention it gets. The village earns the skepticism it gets. The beach is what you're there for.
