Great time, great experience. Food was pretty bland and uninspired, place was very busy so thats probably my own hangup about simple foods having to be prepared well, since preparation is so simple. I think the food needs some real oversight as to how its made or prices need to drop to their competition which would be a taco bell or boxed taco kits at a grocery store.
Great time. Great experience. The food was pretty bland and uninspired, and I think that's worth saying plainly because the price point doesn't account for it.
The setup at John's Tex Mex on South Avenue in Rochester is correct: a lively, busy room on a Saturday, friendly service, and the right energy for a night out in the South Wedge. All of that is real. The food, however, is operating at a price point that requires the kitchen to be paying attention to how simple things are made, and on the Tex Mex front the kitchen isn't doing that. Bland is the exact word. The seasoning on the proteins is minimal. The sauces aren't doing anything.
Food at two. Service at five — the staff was fully attentive in a very busy room and that's a legitimate five. Atmosphere at four because the room and the South Avenue neighborhood location give the place a genuine personality even if the kitchen doesn't match it.
If the price came down to reflect the food quality, this would be a different review. At current prices, you're paying for the experience and the zip code and accepting that the food is an afterthought. I'd come back for drinks. I wouldn't order the main.
