Boulder Coffee on Alexander Street in Rochester earns all three fives and does it without fanfare. Food at five because the coffee program is executed with actual seriousness — the espresso is calibrated, the pour-overs are done correctly, and the food menu does exactly what a café food menu should do when a kitchen is paying attention. Service at five because the staff moves efficiently through a consistently busy room without the self-consciousness that independent coffee shops sometimes carry. Atmosphere at five because the Alexander Street location gives the place actual character: the space is large enough to work in, the lighting is right, and it doesn't feel like a stage set for social media.
Rochester's South Wedge and the Alexander Street stretch make up the kind of neighborhood that every mid-sized city wishes it had more of — dense, walkable, full of independent businesses operating at a high level. Boulder is one of the reasons that part of the city works the way it does. Bug Jar is up the street for a show later. John's Tex Mex is around the corner for drinks if you want the energy without the food. But Boulder is where you start the afternoon.
