Anderson's Farm Market on Route 281 in Homer is the right answer to a Saturday morning in September in CNY. Five stars for a farm stand that earns the score by doing what farm stands should do: selling produce that was grown close by, priced correctly, and presented without the artifice that the farmers market circuit sometimes adds to justify a premium.
The Route 281 location between Homer and Preble puts Anderson's at the natural approach from the south for anyone coming out of Cortland toward the Little York lakes, which means the market catches both the agricultural-area locals and the weekend traffic heading to or from the lake. In season — late August through October — the corn, apples, squash, and pumpkins reflect what the Cortland County farmland does well in the plateau soil and climate. The cider is worth making the stop for on its own.
Lower Little York Lake is essentially adjacent, which makes Anderson's Farm the natural start to a Little York day: pick up the cider and whatever's in season, head down to the lake, come back in the afternoon. Country Flavors in Little York handles the ice cream portion of that loop. The farmland on Route 281 north of Homer is some of the best-looking working ag land in the county and Anderson's is the commercial expression of why it matters.
