What once seemed secure and full of meaning now appeared fragile, hollow, a facade that had cracked and crumbled. There was no going back. I could no longer find solace in simple beliefs or the warmth of innocence, for those things had become foreign to me, their purity tainted by the knowledge of life’s chaos and brutality.

I stood at the edge of a new world, one marked not by light but by shadow, not by certainty but by doubt. And yet, this new world did not welcome me—it consumed me. The innocence I had lost left not freedom but a void, a cold and empty space where once there had been unthinking joy. When the Monk realized this, he scooped his hands down again to save the Scorpion. And just as before, the Scorpion stung his hand and fell back into the stream. This scene repeated itself several times.

A little boy who was playing near the stream asked the Monk, “Excuse me. Why do you keep trying to save the Scorpion — Don’t you know it will just sting you every time you try to rescue it?”

There may be wrong actions in the sense of actions contrary to the rules of human communication. But the way you feel towards other people: loving, hating, et cetera, et cetera; there aren’t any wrong feelings.

And so, to try and force one’s feelings to be other than what they are is absurd. And furthermore: dishonest.

But you see: the idea that there are no wrong feelings is an immensely threatening one to people who are afraid to feel.

This is one of the peculiar problems of our culture: we are terrified of our feelings. We think that if we give them any scope and if we don’t immediately beat them down, they will lead us down into all kinds of chaotic and actions.
